CLUB
HISTORY |
|
Although
Turnford Rangers F.C. have been going for many years, the following is
only their recent history.....
We were formerly known as FCUK, made up of a group of friends who grew up,
went to school and played youth football together. After youth football
everyone went there separate ways to either smoke, booze or womanise (or
all three in some cases) and after developing smokers coughs, beer bellies
and a few STD's, it was time to wise up and get fitter !
The group
came together when asked to play a friendly against Spennytown, a new side
who had just joined the Mercury Waltham League. We lost 2-1 to them,
which was a good result considering Spennytown went on to 'slaughter'
Division 6. After that game, everyone developed a taste for footy again
and we played a few more friendlies against other local teams who wanted
to break into the same league as us or just for a competitive kickaround.
We attempted to join the league with the team but realised we didn't have
the financial muscle or organisation and met up with Turnford Rangers
purely coincidentally over Wormley Playing Fields. A team a few of us
played for had dropped us and as a laugh Paul Day shouted jokingly out to
this team on the main Wormley Pitch "Need a couple of players?"
with that they said "yeah, 2", to our amazement and off we went
and got 'battered' by Wormley Reserves.
We got to know the fellas after the game and it turned out they were
drinking at our local pub and that they were about to disband. To our luck
we then said we would take over the running of the club and after a few
more discussions in the Anchor Pub, FCUK had merged with Turnford Rangers
and a new era was born. All the old boys then cleared off to brush down
their Zimmer frames and left the club basically in our hands.
In our first proper season together (2001-02) we finished 4th in Division
6, which was fairly disappointing when we really should have got promoted.
This season (2002-03), with a better attitude and squad, we'll be looking
to start to fill the Anchor Pub's Cabinet with footy trophies rather than
the numerous Cribbage Titles ! |
